This is identical to the basic smart link. it allows smart weapons to work but no critical damage boost. it also jams enemy smart weapons very effectively. if moving especially smart weapons usually miss. unless you need the crit damage its arguable better than the legendary smart link. also the accuracy boost on the legendary probably doesn't do anything. smart weapons dont have a miss chance, they hit if the path and angle is clear or miss if its not. So yes this is free and probably better than the legendary one that costs over 20k

The notes should mention that having this installed makes it harder for enemy Smart Weapons to lock onto you. Also, many Tyger Claws have this mod installed, preventing Smart Weapons from working against them correctly.

Is this any different from the smart link? The description is identical in my game but I can't imagine why they would just give me a 7.5k item right at the start of the game, making the smart link pointless.

In the actual description It talks about jamming smart weapon capability.
In the notes: "Despite the description, this module does not jam enemy smart bullets"
While I had this installed on my char, I noticed, that quite a few shots went haywire, when I was shot at with smart weapons. I would say it gives around 10-20% protection. It may have been bugged at the time the the guide was written.
